fromage, crackers, vin - besides liquor.

i think your basics should cover it:
vodka
gin
bourbon (like jack daniels)
maybe some mixers like triple sec
rum

these cover a lot of your common drinks like:
daquiris, jack and coke, vodka cranberry or any martinis.

or you could think about what you and your friends typically drink and then just keep a supply of those items handy!

I always try to keep vodka ,brandy, whiskey,rum,Tequilla,a couple of after dinner types like a baileys or caramel liquor .And always keep mix for bloody marys some juice in house and cola and seven or sour.Nice to have lemon and lime, a few beers, and some wine too.That should cover most people Or just consider what guests you are having and what they like.

The brands depend on whether you want to go "top shelf" or not. For instance, Grey Goose is the best vodka. But if you may not want to spend $35 a bottle. For scotch, go for a single-malt like Glenlivet. The single-malts are better than blended. Bombay is a good gin.

I would start with the basics. At least two varieties of each. VODKA: Grey Goose and Ketel one
BOURBON: Elmer T. Lee and Woodford reserve (these are sipping bourbons not for mixing)
SCOTCH (single malt) The Dalmore and Highland park
GIN: Saphire or Tanguery
RUM: Captain Morgan for mixing and for sippin Pyrat XO and Cruzan

Then switch over to your wines

2 RED: Merlot and a Shiraz

2 WHITE: a Chardonnay and a sweeter Reisling

Haggis and Kimchee. Johnny Walker, Capn. Morgan, Jamacan Apple butter rum... Mmmmm RumMMMM, I don't drink anymore, but that's a good start...

I think a good liquor cabinet needs the bare basics. The odds are that you'll be doing mixed drinks, so there is no need for expensive liquors either. The real key to your question is actually more of the mixers. As far as the Liquors........

1 basic Vodka...unless you're planning on doing shots/Martinis I would not waste my money on premium/expensive brands. Absolut is fairly inexpensive, and certainly decent. Popov I think gets my vote for best cheap vodka. If you want to impress the priciest are Belvedere and Grey Goose, but personally I think the best tasting vodka is Kettle 1.

2. A basic bourbon (see reasoning of vodka)....Jack Daniels is a good basic.

3. A basic Gin....almost no one drinks Gin martinis anymore...and no one drinks it in shots....so go for a cheapie. Certainly nothing fancier then a basic Bombay.

4. Splurge for a nice scotch.....people will drink scotch straight...and you do get what you pay for.....a somewhat reasonable nice single malt is Glenlivet. Personally I'm addicted to Llagavulin (sp?)

5. Any triple sex

6. A basic rum

7. One decent brandy for after dinner drinks....splurge here.

8. Grenadine (for the girlie drinkers)

9. Rosa's lime juice.....nice and cheap

One sweeter appertif liquer....something like amaretto

Each bar should have some congac, vodka, tequila, rum, whiskey and brandy two types top and bottom shelf bottom

etc...these are used for mixed drinks like dacories
the top shelf is for people who really drink and like the flavor you also need lemons, olives, limes and cherrys
club soda and a blender and that should do it for a starter bar that is.
